Identifying sounds within words is a phonemic and phonological awareness skill, that is fundamental to literacy, including reading, writing, manipulating sounds and words. Identifying sounds within clusters, both initial and final word clusters, is also an important step for developing literacy skills.
 
While rhyming and blending of short words are often thought to be developed earlier on in development, identifying initial and final sounds and clusters is a phonemic awareness skill that is developed in the primary years of school. It forms the foundation for kids to be able to read, write, spell and sound out words.

It includes an introduction, and three sections:
Clusters– the aim is to recognise the two sounds that join together to make clusters, as well as generate words with such clusters.
Identifying sounds within initial clusters (CCVC)– the aim for the child to identify the starting consonant cluster (two sounds) of the word.
Identifying sounds within final clusters (CVCC) – the aim is for the child to identify the final consonant cluster (two sounds).
