Identifying sounds within words is a phonemic and phonological awareness skill, that is fundamental to literacy, including reading, writing, manipulating sounds and words.
While rhyming and blending of short words are often thought to be developed earlier on in development, identifying initial and final sounds is a phonemic awareness skill that is developed in the primary years of school. It forms the foundation for kids to be able to read, write, spell and sound out words.
